Firearms Specialist Shinnosuke “Shin” Tanaka was born in Tokyo, Japan. He moved to the United States in 2003 to attend the Larsen Gunsmithing program and graduated in 2005 with an associates degree. In 2008 he became a technical gun writer for a firearms related magazine in Japan, Korea and Taiwan and also Recoil magazine in the US. In 2014 he moved to California where worked for Dave’s Metal Works as a gunsmith. In 2015 he decided to become a firearms instructor and provided practical marksmanship to law enforcement and security in the US, Japan and Taiwan. In 2018 he made the move to Las Vegas and joined LVMPD in 2020 as a Firearms Specialist.
Shin has been shooting and competing since 2004 in various practical shooting competitions. The most recognizable achievements he has earned throughout his competitive shooting career is the title of Grandmaster with the United States Practical Shooting Association in two divisions and the Master title with the International Defensive Pistol Association in three divisions.
Shin grew up watching 80s action hero movies and he believes that is what really inspired him to get into the firearms field. He believes his position as a Firearms Specialist for LVMPD is the best because he is able to help provide a safer working environment for our officers through his extensive knowledge, experience and passion. He believes he is working with real life action heroes here at LVMPD.
